FOUNDATION TUTORIAL
How to choose formula and color and why mine sometimes changes daily…
Did you know that the average person will buy 7 wrong foundations at the Drug Store before finding a good color match? Crazy huh? Drug Store prices range from $5.99-$9.99 a bottle, so after 7 bottles that adds up. I highly recommend when you choose a foundation get matched with your perfect shade so you know that it is going to work for your skin, here is where my foundation tutorial comes in!
There are some good drugstore foundation out there as far as color goes for sure, but they do have more filler ingredients in them and most of them contain parabens which have been proven to cause cancer. Make sure to check the label when purchasing it to make sure it is paraben free and doesn’t contain mineral oil. The reason I buy it from a Department store is because most of them give your skin more treatment and benefits.
When buying foundation think of your wardrobe. You don’t have all summer clothes or all winter clothes right? No, you have clothes for each season and so many times I hear people say ” well I get darker in the summer so will this still match?” ………NOPE….. just like you wouldn’t wear a sweatshirt in 90 degree weather. Your foundation shade will definitely change with the seasons and you will most likely have to have at LEAST 2 foundations throughout the year to match your skins color.
You also need to think about the environment your skin is in when choosing a foundation. For myself, I travel A LOT and am on at least 4-8 flights a month and travel to many different climates, so for me I have an arsenal of different foundations for different weather.
How to select your perfect foundation shade and formula
When I travel to Denver I use an ultra hydrating foundation and have to layer more moisturizer or Face oil in my foundation for more hydration. Check out our last tutorial on the blog for My Current Skin Care Routine to see how I utilize my Face Oil. When I am traveling to a warmer more humid climate I will use something more oil controlling or oil free. Make sure to watch the foundation tutorial below for my BIG MYTH BUSTER about using Oil Free Foundation.
The current foundations I am using in the tutorial are the BB Water sf 30 from Smashbox and the Skin Foundation Stick from Bobbi Brown. The BB water gives me more sheer coverage with hydration and the stick foundation give me more long wear and coverage. I love them layered together and blended out with the Beauty Blender .

I really like the idea of using all these nice foundations, but I always end up going back to Cover Girl for the price and it’s easier to find.
Gosh I didn’t realize finding the proper foundation was so in-depth. I’ve been trying to get more into makeup lately, but between the time application takes and the price I’m inclined to stop. What’s the difference between the $8 drugstore foundations and the $50 Sephora ones??

Roxy
The biggest thing would be the parabens that are found in a lot of drugstore makeup. I don’t think you need to spend $50, it’s just what works for your skin, but most of the department store brands have a lot of added benefits- like some sort of serum properties, longer wearing, better color selection and/or SPF. So it’s just something to consider. We have been testing out a bunch of the drugstore kinds and comparing them to the higher priced ones to see what is better- wear for wear. 🙂 So far I think the E.L.F BB cream is better than the other drugstore ones i’ve tried. We are going to post about all that for sure. One more thing is to never be shy to go into Nordstrom or Sephora and ask those girls for samples of the foundation in your color, that way you can can wear it for a few days before purchasing! When we used to manage their we were all about encouraging our teams to sample! 🙂

That little fun fact about 7 drugstore foundations is crazy! I think my skin just KNOWS if I spend less than like, $20 on a foundation. It freaks out. What a little high maintenance P.I.T.A. lol. Anyway. I loved all of your suggestions and as a fellow beauty blogger on brighterdarling.com, completely agree with having at least two different types of foundations (and probably 2 shades each haha). My personal two favorites are Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation (for a light/medium, more hydrating formula) or Estee Lauder Double Wear (the full coverage, heavy duty one). 🙂
Oh yes! I loooove Estée Lauder Double Wear when I need that fullll coverage! Family pictures anyone? So good! I think our skin must be friends, because it’s so true!

I have been wanting to get a foundation from so long! I go to the drugstore and look at the colors but I am never sure which one will work on me. A total newbie you see 😀 I am thinking of going to Sephora and getting some help to choose the shade. I actually did not know that the foundation color changes with season! A very vey informative post. Also, love how natural your skin looks.. Hope you are having a great day love <3

Your foundation looks great! It definitely can be a struggle finding the perfect shade, drugstore especially does not do a very good job of supporting a variety of undertones!
