Choosing An Acne Treatment That’s Right For You

Choosing An Acne Treatment That’s Right For You

Finding the right acne treatment for your skin can be a daunting task. With so many different products out there, using a combination of creams, foams, scrubs, serums, moisturizers and other components, it’s nearly impossible to decipher what it is that works for you.

Not only is there enough products out there to make your head spin, everybody’s different – so what might work for one person might not work for another.

In the search for effective acne treatments that will work best for your skin, there’s a few things you have to consider, all of which are linked in one way or another. Here’s what you need to pay close attention to if you really want to rid yourself of acne and obtain clear, pimple-free skin.

Skin Type

This is important, as your skin type will ultimately dictate how your body reacts to a specific treatment, so what kind of skin do you have? Is it dry and rough? Is it patchy and sandy? Is it oily and moisturized? Is it somewhere in between? You can check out our post on determining your skin type here!

It’s a common myth that only people with oily skin can get acne, but that simply isn’t true, although they are more prone to breakouts than those without oily skin. Both oily-skinned and dry-skinned people can experience horrible acne, but the way to treat the two of them is very different.

Oily skin often requires a holistic treatment, combining oral supplements that affect the hormones and oil-producing mechanisms deep in the skin that cause acne. Treatments that only have a topical element to them are often useless on this type of skin.

On the other hand, those with dry skin have acne that is caused by buildups of dry skin and other debris. For people with this type of skin, an exfoliating cream is a necessity, as it clears the dry skin that is blocking their pores and causing the acne.

Somewhere in between lies those with neither excessively oily nor excessively dry skin. These people usually require an array of treatments in order to see significant results.

Acne Type

The type of acne that you’re experiencing is a huge factor in discovering the proper treatment for your acne.

There’s essentially four different types of acne. They are, in order from least serious to most problematic, as follows:

Whiteheads and Blackheads these are the most common forms of acne, the result of blocked pores that may or may not break the surface of the skin. These types of acne are the most easily treated, often going away within a few days of applying a simple topical treatment.

Pustules and Papules– These types of acne are the ones that most people think of when they see acne. Red, swollen bumps with a whitish, yellowy, pussy center. They usually collect around the mouth and the forehead, and are often popped, leading to more problems. These are deeper-rooted than whiteheads and blackheads, but can also treated topically, usually needing several different treatments.

Cystic and Nodule Acne – The most painful and deep-rooted acne, this type of acne is also the most difficult to treat. Cysts and nodules appear similar to pustules and papules, but their roots are below several layers of skin. These pimples form deep, deep under the skin, making topical treatments mostly useless. The only way to really treat cystic and nodular acne is by utilizing an oral treatment that works to remove the deep roots of these types of acne. Topical creams are practically useless.

Age

Although less important than the other two factors, age plays a big part in what kind of treatment works best for you.

As we get older, our skin begins to thin out, making it more sensitive to treatment. That’s why harsh treatments like benzoyl peroxide can be great for younger people, but it can seriously damage the skin in older people.

Likewise, younger people tend to have more oily skin, due to the constant flux of hormones that occur during the teenage years and early adulthood. Therefore, their treatment will differ from adult treatment.

So What Treatment Is Best For Me?

That’s not an easily answered question, because everyone is different. Some people have taken years to discover a skin care product that works for them.

Everyone will benefit from a good gentle cleanser and a light, consistent exfoliating (we love our Clairsonic for this, you can watch our how-to and video review here)!

Don’t get an exfoliating scrub with harsh chemicals or pieces of anything- i’m looking at you Apricot Scrub from my teens. You do not want to cut your face! Unless you are getting an in-office treatment by a professional ;).

The topical treatments that utilize salycic acid, a treatment that is less harmful for sensitive skin than benzoyl peroxide, which can leave skin red and inflamed. This is especially useful in treating adult acne, which as noted earlier, is more sensitive to benzoyl peroxide.

For those who do not have sensitive skin you may respond well to an alternating regimen of the two ingredients. Giving a day off in-between if sensitivities occur.

These treatments don’t need to be the expensive brand. You want to look at the ingredient list. Look for the first few ingredients being these. Look for little or no alcohol.

There are oral supplements that your doctor may prescribe, working to uproot acne deep in the skin, like cysts and nodules, and even pustules, while the other topical treatments are perfect for eliminating the topical pimples like whiteheads and blackheads.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Tutorial |25th Anniversary Palettes

Bobbi Brown Makeup Tutorial

HAPPY 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY BOBBI BROWN COSMETICS!!!!!

This is such an exciting year for Bobbi Brown as she celebrates 25 years of making women feel empowered and beautiful. I am honored to be apart of such a wonder company and I am happy to say that I just entered into my 9th year working for this wonderful brand.

I have had the pleasure to work with Bobbi on many occasions and she is wonderful, inspiring and full of passion. Her philosophy remains true after all these years. She wants women to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. In honor of this year she just launched the Be Who You Are movement and you can watch the campaign video here.

Watching this video gives me so much pride that I work for someone who stands for something so much more than makeup. As women we need to empower each other and build one another up. Let’s all be true to ourselves and BE WHO WE ARE.

Bobbi created 3 Limited Edition City Palettes from the places in the world that have inspired her, London, Paris and New York. Todays Tutorial I used the New York City Palette to create an easy everyday look.

You can watch my full Bobbi Brown Makeup Tutorial here on YouTube.

The New York City Palette is an eyeshadow palette created exclusively for Bobbi’s 25th anniversary inspired by the cool, effortless style of New Yorkers.

The New York City palette is for anyone who wants the signature Bobbi look. Since launching in New York, Bobbi has become synonymous with the nude makeup look. This palette features four nude shadows in matte and metallic finishes. Finish the look with the perfect natural blush shade in Tawny. Each palette is in a collectible mirrored compact with an illustration by renowned artist Richard Haines.

New York City Palette includes:
- Cream Eyeshadow (a warm white)
- Champagne Quartz Metallic Eyeshadow (a champagne pink)
- Birch Eyeshadow (a soft brown)
- Espresso Eyeshadow (a dark chocolate brown)
- Tawny Blush (a medium pink brown)

How I created todays Bobbi Brown Makeup Tutorial using the 25th Anniversary New York City Palette.

Using the Eye Sweep brush, sweep the Cream from your lash line to your browbone. Dust Birch on the lower lid and into the crease with the Morphe M513 brush. For added dimension, layer Champagne Quartz on the lower lid and inner corner of the eyes. Using the smokey liner brush, line your upper and lower lash lines in Espresso. Of course I layered an addition coat of the Eye Opening Mascara to make the eyes really stand out. Take the Angled Face Brush and sweep Tawny on the apples of your cheeks followed by a light layer of Pink Quartz Shimmer Brick. I finished the look with the Brown #4 Lipstick, Pink Mauve Liner and White gloss.

I hope you all enjoyed this Bobbi Brown Makeup Tutorial. If you missed last weeks tutorial, check out my love for the new Retouching Wands.

Football Season Food | Chicken Calzone

Welcome back friends! Are you ready for some more football inspired fun? Last week we shared a HUGE roundup of Fall fashion perfect for tailgating or football parties. This week we are switching gears and talking about the Football Season Food!

These easy Chicken Cordon Bleu Calzones are stuffed with swiss cheese, ham and chicken for the ultimate football season food!

One of the things I like best about these is how versatile they are- they are quick and easy to make if you want to make them fresh. They can be made ahead and frozen, only needing a few minutes in the oven to get you ready for the game or they can be wrapped in tinfoil and warmed up at a tailgating party!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 16 ounces pizza dough
  • 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 8 slices deli Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices deli ham
  • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken breast
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll or stretch the dough into a 6 to 8 inch oval. Brush the surface of the dough with the Dijon mustard- leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
  3. Layer to slices of cheese, two slices of ham and 1/2 cup shredded chicken on the dough leaving a 1 inch border around the edges.
  4. the dough over the chicken and press the edges together to seal. Pinch tightly to avoid the cheese leaking out during baking.
  5. Repeat with the remaining dough and other ingredients.
  6. Place the calzones on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal to keep them from sticking.
  7. Brush the surface of the calzones with the egg, this gives it the nice golden brown crisp on the outside.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Serve immediately

Hey Darlings! Today’s tutorial is a full face demo on using only 3 shades of the Retouching Wands to do my foundation, concealer/highlight and cream bronzer. I used the shade Medium for my concealer, Medium to Dark as my all over foundation shade and the Rich as my cream bronzing shade to add dimension.
